OVERVIEW

Ecology Action is an award-winning nonprofit environmental consultancy that's been helping people create positive change for the community, the economy, and the environment for over five decades. In addition to being an industry leader in the design and delivery of energy efficiency programs, we also operate a vibrant green communities division that runs programs focused on pollution prevention, sustainable transportation, and water conservation.

We are seeking an energetic, dedicated, and passionate Program Coordinator to help us deliver sustainable transportation education programs focused specifically on biking and pedestrian safety for audiences representing diverse ages and backgrounds. Though this person will officially be a member of our Watsonville team, they will also be expected to periodically support the teams based out of Santa Cruz and Salinas on an as-needed basis.

The ideal candidate will have a strong affinity for, and experience, working with youth and the general public. The work is rewarding and fun, as we are helping our community become more active through safe and sustainable transportation habits.

We are hiring for one 40 hours-per-week position. The position requires availability between 6am and 4pm on weekdays for scheduled events during the school day as well as occasional weekend or evening events.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Program Coordinator I/II - Active Transportation supports the delivery of sustainable transportation education programs. Specifically, this position focuses on biking and pedestrian safety for audiences of diverse ages and backgrounds.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively engage community members representing diverse ages and backgrounds, in education and outreach programming, with areas of focus including, but not limited to:
    • K-12 youth-focused bike and pedestrian programming (Bike Safe and Walk Safe classroom and assembly presentations, Family Fun Festivals, Walking School Bus events, Learn to Ride Clinics and community outreach events).
    • Adult-focused pedestrian programming (senior walking programs).
    • Bike programming engages all ages but primarily serves adult audiences and includes - but is not limited to - bike challenges, bike safety trainings, informational workshops, group rides, bike repair events and family rides.
  • Build and nurture collaborations with school staff, community-based organizations, local businesses, community groups and public agencies.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with a range of stakeholders, verbally and in writing, specifically to coordinate, schedule and deliver programming.
  • Assist with Spanish translation for a range of written program deliverables, including marketing assets.
  • Assist with program data collection and evaluation as a mechanism to satisfy funders, inform program improvement and validate impact. Assist with metric tracking in support of grant contract reporting.
  • Assist with the organization, care, maintenance, transport and set up/take down of programming supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with the tracking and distribution of equipment (e.g. community distributions of bikes, helmets, and lights).
  • Assist with volunteer and intern coordination and training.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 2 years' youth education and community outreach experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be qualifying.
  • Substantive public speaking experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Fluent in Spanish and English with a demonstrated ability to clearly and professionally communicate
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively engage audiences
  • Excellent classroom management skills with youth to maintain an effective learning environment
  • Self-motivated, energetic, helpful and positive attitude
  • Quick learner to be able to excel at multitude of demanding assignments
  • Experience working in office setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; strong Word and Excel skills
  • Excellent coordination, prioritization, and organizational skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Valid California Class C Driver's license, a reliable personal vehicle available for work purposes and current automobile insurance

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • College degree in a field related to education or active transportation
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience working in a non-profit setting
  • Interest in promoting a clean environment and alternative transportation

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is 40-hours per week and requires availability between 6am and 4pm on weekdays for scheduled events during the school day as well as occasional weekend or evening events.

This position is a member of the Watsonville team, however, is also be expected to periodically support the teams based out of Santa Cruz and Salinas on an as-needed basis.

The work environment for this positions is a mixture of an office setting and working out in the field (at schools and community events).

Preparation for training events involves multiple trips to the storage unit in the basement to load and unload supplies into the agency trailer, including bicycles, boxes of helmets, and other supplies. The employee must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk and hear, and use a computer keyboard and monitor.
