We are seeking a Finance Director responsible for managing all aspects of financial accounting and payroll to support 130 employees and a $30M budget. The Director supervises three Accounting professionals and also performs some accounting functions directly. The position reports to the VP & General Counsel who currently handles budgeting and most other managerial accounting.

The accounting environment is a challenging mix of for-profit and nonprofit methodologies involving government grants and contracts, 70+ cost centers, extremely complex invoicing of utility company clients, and an incentive pay system.  The position is responsible for assuring the sufficiency and rigorous application of internal controls as well as the overall integrity of the accounting functions, which includes overseeing the annual audit and any governmental audits or reviews as necessary.


  • Supervise and foster the professional development of three Accounting staff, including two senior accountants.
  • Ensure effective financial/accounting practices are consistent with GAAP, developing and
  • implementing best practice finance and administrative systems.
  • Produce monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Manage daily, short-term and long-term cash flow needs, drawing on our line of credit as needed.
  • Manage processes for quality control, operational efficiency, and accuracy in departmental work.
  • Supervise and participate in the invoicing process.
  • Supervise payment of all vendors and employee reimbursements.
  • Supervise payroll, including performance incentive compensation.
  • Continuously upgrade and rigorously enforce internal controls.
  • Assure legal and regulatory compliance of financial operations.
  • Alert the VP & General Counsel of problems and irregularities.
  • Lead the annual external audit process.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and act as both a strategic leader and an individual contributor.
  • Provide business development staff with financial information needed for proposals and grant applications.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial information, including updated projections and changes, for use in contract and grant reporting.
  • Accelerate our transition to electronic processing systems and reduced use of paper.
  • As needed, perform accounting functions in the absence of regular personnel.


Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 12 years of professional experience with a minimum of 8 years of increasing
  • responsibility and professional experience in finance, accounting, or related fields; including at least 5 years management responsibility.
  • Experience with both for-profit and nonprofit accounting.
  • Thorough understanding of finance and accounting policies and practices.
  • Leadership and coaching skills to develop a highly motivated and cross-trained group of progressive accounting professionals.
  • Experience with profit and loss reporting and balancing ledgers for operating and balance sheet accounts.
  • Aptitude for performing numerical analyses of data and formulating conclusions and/or solutions.
  • Ability to use logic to define a problem, collect information, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, interpret information and deal with abstract variables for unique or unfamiliar situations.
  • Excellent record of sensitively implementing an employer's policies and contributing to policy development.
  • Experience with government contracts.
  • Familiarity with financing.
  • Must be flexible and capable of accommodating unusual accounting needs that arise from our multifaceted operations.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and uncertainty while nonetheless meeting the rigors of accounting standards.
  • Ability to comprehend and use technical and professional language, either written or spoken, to communicate complex ideas.
  • High level of proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
  • A minimum of a bachelor's (BA, BS) degree or equivalent training and preparation for the position.


Desired Qualifications

  • MBA, CPA, or advanced degree in related field.
  • Familiarity with energy efficiency and/or utilities. 
  • Experience with managerial accounting.
  • Experience with complex invoicing.
  • Good sense of humor.
