Senior Accountant (Remote/Hybrid)

The Senior Accountant is responsible for properly processing financial transactions, accurately representing the financial condition of Ecology Action, developing controls necessary for the proper conduct of the business, and maintaining accurate records necessary to manage the enterprise and meet the requirements of funders and government agencies. Our ideal Senior Accountant is a strong team player who is able to build relationships and collaborate with a diverse group of dedicated professionals. Remote or hybrid options are available in California.

Senior Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Manage the payroll process including transmitting data to HRIS provider, processing changes to payroll, resolving employee pay issues, reconciling payroll, booking journal entries, submitting 401(k) contributions and issuing all related pay and tax forms
  • Monitor compliance with applicable Ecology Action policies and work with his or her supervisor to address apparent violations
  • Ensure all records are maintained in accordance with GAAP
  • Assist in the identification and resolution of accounting and reporting issues
  • Maintain accounting systems, procedures and practices to ensure/enhance proper internal controls
  • Responsible for the following:
    • Payroll
    • Accounts Receivable -invoicing, collections, validation of deductions, and posting of cash to assigned customer accounts
    • Daily receipts of money
    • Accounts Payable - process all approved invoices and expense reports for payment
    • Maintain electronic and paper files of contracts for vendors and clients, annual preparation and distribution of 1099's to vendors, W9s, etc.
    • Banking - monthly reconciliation of bank accounts, bank reporting quarterly with Letter of Credit
    • Benefits - URM/DDC payments to employees, 401k annual true-up, annual 5500 process, 401k SAR to all employees
    • Backup of other accounting staff
    • Similar duties as assigned

Senior Accountant Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Eight or more years of increasing responsibility and a track record of success in accounting and control in a non-profit environment
  • Experience with nonprofit and for-profit entities as well as energy efficiency
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and standard accounting processes and controls
  • Strong experience in month end close through financial statement preparation
  • Advanced experience with QuickBooks and Excel
  • University degree in Accounting/Finance or equivalent
  • Effective communication skills - including the ability to listen to the needs of others, articulate issues in a clear and concise manner, and present findings as well as recommendations in both oral and written presentations
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, and experience applying these skills to resolve operational accounting process and system issues
  • Customer focus and the ability to effectively collaborate and influence in a cross-functional and/or matrix environment
  • Comfort with initiating and responding to change; demonstrated ability to leverage systems to improve complex accounting processes and controls
  • Ability to set priorities, handle multiple tasks, and deliver results in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment
  • Equally strong background in accounts payable and accounts receivable, accounting or finance, business processes and internal control evaluation
  • Flexibility and a willingness to adopt new procedures

Work Environment and Location: The work environment is an office setting and is temporarily remote due to COVID. Ecology Action has implemented a hybrid model that includes both in-office and remote work.
