SUMMARY OF POSITION |
Ecology Action is seeking an Outreach Specialist to join our Transportation Planning team as we improve safety for people walking and biking in Salinas and the Salinas Valley. This team member will assist with outreach for two planning efforts: an Active Transportation Plan for the City of Salinas and a Safe Routes to Schools Plan for Salinas Valley communities. Work will be performed both in-person and virtually. Local candidates based in Salinas, or the Salinas Valley are strongly encouraged to apply.
Ecology Action seeks a team-oriented, positive, motivated, flexible, and highly organized individual to fill the Outreach Specialist position. The successful candidate must be passionate about engaging with community members and able to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic work setting.
This position is currently scheduled to run through December 31, 2023, and continuation beyond this is dependent upon program funding. RESPONSIBILITIES |
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct outreach in English and Spanish with diverse community members including individuals, parents, school staff, businesses, community groups, and public agencies.
- Assist with outreach event coordination, including tabling opportunities at existing events and coordination of public workshops.
- Gather public comments and survey responses through a variety of venues.
- Work on content and messaging translation for a Spanish speaking audience.
- Assist with outreach and implementation of school-based pop-up bike/pedestrian traffic safety infrastructure demonstrations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE |
- Community outreach experience (2+ years)
- Bilingual Spanish speaker
- Strong public outreach skills and professional demeanor when interacting with the public, school administrators, public agency staff partners, and other stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook)
- Valid driver license, proof of minimum required insurance and reliable transportation
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS |
- Experience with event organizing.
- Experience with or knowledge of urban planning, especially bicycle and pedestrian planning.
- Experience working with school communities, including administrators, teachers, parents, and students.

Work Environment: The work environment is primarily an office setting and/or working from home with strong IT and administrative support. Outreach work will be conducted on school grounds, at community events, and with community organizations.
