Ecology Action is hiring for one 32 hours per week Program Specialist to join our Transportation Team to work on several of its core programs.

The main focus will be EA's adult bike commuter programs, including Bike to Work and Employee Bike Commute Services as well as Friends of the Rail & Trail, Bike/Walk to School, and other programs when needed. The Program Specialist will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a suite of programs/events to increase adult and college student commuting.

Ecology Action seeks a team-oriented, talented, energetic, flexible and highly organized individual to fill the Program Specialist position. The successful candidate must have prior program management experience with an emphasis on special event work; planned and implemented programs/events; volunteer/intern management; produced and maintained program budgets; written contract invoices and reports; conducted baseline and follow up surveys; worked with a variety of partners to implement a program; have highly proficient computer program skills, especially in Excel and Word.

 

General Job Responsibilities

  • Manage, plan and implement complex, multi-site special events and projects.
  • Produce and manage project budgets.
  • Provide oversight and manage grant contracts with funders and project sponsors.
  • Prepare invoice narratives, record and quantify project results and write final reports.
  • Work closely with the EA Transportation Marketing/Communication staff to promote events.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers/interns, including mobilizing dozens of volunteers on-site at events.
  • Coordinate with EA staff for them to assist with Bike to Work/School program delivery.
  • Form and nurture partnerships with a variety of agencies, businesses, individuals, groups and business sponsors.
  • Conduct baseline and follow-up surveys.
  • Outreach to and recruitment of employers to increase worksite/employee engagement.
  • Assist with sponsorship/development work as needed.

 

Program Specific Responsibilities

 Bike to Work/School Day Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate Spring and Fall Bike to Work/School (BTW/S) Day events as well as Spring Bike Week. Work tasks include planning activities, managing budgets, implementing projects, coordinating volunteers, and working with other staff on marketing opportunities. Secure cash, food, and supply donations with assistance from EA development staff. Manage the food delivery and distributions for BTW/S days for over 6,500 participants.
  • Coordinate and/or supervise the over 50 BTW/S breakfast sites in Santa Cruz County: secure locations, coordinate with school site managers, recruit volunteers, and secure necessary permits, insurance and agreements. Plan and implement additional Bike Week events, including First Friday at the MAH, Activate the River Ride, Trail Mixers on the coastal rail corridor, and more.

Worksite Bike Commuter/Sustainable Transportation Services Responsibilities:

  • Manage EA's employer sustainable transportation services with an emphasis on bike commuting. Plan and implement large employer safety and commuter education trainings at UCSC, County of Santa Cruz, etc. Manage and implement program services that include zero interest bike loans and emergency rides home, expand services to effectively increase bike commuting, recruit new employers, coordinate effort with Bike to Work Day worksite expansion, recruit new partners.

Assist other EA Transportation programs where needed.

  • The position will support our fiscally sponsored Friends of the Rail & Trail project to include assisting and coordinating the FORT Board with outreach events, board meetings, communications, and other logistics.
  • Assist other EA staff on a variety of programs including fundraising, school based program delivery, and planning work on an as needed basis.

 

Professional Skills:

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate college degree in the area of Environmental Studies, Community Studies, Physical Sciences, Natural Resources, Biological Science, Social Marketing, Business, Education, Communications, or related field.
  • Five or more years intern, educational, or professional experience (or combination thereof) in the area of environmental or community program implementation, or related field.
  • Experience with event planning and implementation.
  • Experience recruiting, coordinating, and training volunteers.
  • Ability to produce budgets, manage budgets, and follow budget guidelines.
  • Grant and contract management, including budget and project management skills and experience required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word programs, and e-mail a must. Database program experience preferred.
  • Orientation and aptitude for motivating, appreciating and stewarding all program supporters from sponsors to volunteers to participants.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task required.
  • Excellent and professional communication and coordination skills and the ability or organize yourself and a broad team is a must.
  • Managerial experience (staff and volunteers).

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk and hear, and use a computer keyboard and monitor. Generally, the work environment is an office setting. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Compensation and benefits: The target range for this position is $22 - 24 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
