Ecology Action is hiring for one 30-34 hours per week Program Assistant to join our Transportation Team. The position requires availability between 6am and 4pm on weekdays for scheduled events as well as occasional weekend events. The role is scheduled to end in June 2018, upon completion of the school year.

In addition to being an industry leader in the design and delivery of energy efficiency programs, we also operate a vibrant green communities division that runs programs focused on pollution prevention, sustainable transportation, and water conservation.  

We are seeking an energetic program assistant to help us deliver sustainable transportation education and encouragement programs across Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. This position is an exciting opportunity to work with a variety of our Community Programs, including Youth Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education, Bike to Work/School, Friends of the Rail & Trail, Motor Oil Recycling, and more! Due to the variable nature of the work, the ideal candidate will have the opportunity to work at schools with children, at community events with the general public, and in the office.

The ideal candidate will have a strong affinity for, and experience working with the public, especially with youth. The work is rewarding and fun, as we are helping our community be more active through safe and sustainable transportation habits.



Bike Smart Youth Bicycle Safety and Walk Smart Pedestrian Safety Education Programs:

  • Prepare materials for presentations (including gathering paperwork, loading supplies into the trailer)
  • Assist with the delivery of in-class bike/walk safety presentations or assemblies (for groups of 30-120), mostly 2nd and 5th grade students.
  • Grade student pre- and post-presentation evaluations and record information.
  • Assist lead educators with on-bike safety training and pedestrian safety field trips for each class (requires management of 15-30 students during activity).
  • Transport supplies to rodeo locations using company vehicle and trailer (supplies include approximately 20 bikes, 30 helmets, wooden stops signs/cars, a teeter-totter, cones, etc.).
  • Setup and break down obstacle courses.
  • Assist with the management student interns and volunteers.
  • Assist with volunteer retention.

Bike and Walk Encouragement:

  • Assist program manager with preparation of materials for Monthly Bike to School Days.
  • Deliver materials and equipment to school sites.
  • Staff monthly activities at schools throughout Santa Cruz County, as needed.
  • Assist with program promotion at school events.
  • Assist with the Bi-Annual Bike/Walk to Work/School Days and Spring Bike Week.

Other Programs:

  • Assist the Friends of the Rail & Trail Board with monthly meetings and conduct community outreach as scheduled by program coordinator.
  • Conduct bi-lingual outreach for our Motor Oil Recycling Program.


Professional Skills:

Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Minimum one year of experience working with youth, ideally in an education/teaching role.
  • Experience delivering instruction to youth in a clear, concise, passionate manner.
  • Excellent classroom management skills with youth to maintain an effective learning environment.
  • Ability to convey and foster enthusiasm to get students excited about biking/walking.
  • Experience with direct, person-to-person, community outreach and education.
  • Interest in promoting a sustainable environment and alternative transportation.
  • Self-motivated, energetic, helpful and positive attitude.
  • Quick learner to be able to excel at multitude of demanding assignments.
  • Experience working in office setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office computer skills; strong Excel skills (ability to create spreadsheets).
  • Excellent and professional communication, coordination and organizational skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's license, a reliable personal vehicle available for work purposes (mileage reimbursement provided), and current automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Undergraduate college degree in related field.
  • At least four years of teaching experience.

  • For Bike Smart and Walk Smart program tasks, the environment is a mixture of an office setting and working out in the field (at schools and community events) to plan and deliver youth bicycle trainings.
  • Preparation for youth bicycle training events involves multiple trips to the storage unit in basement to load and unload supplies into the trailer, including bicycles, boxes of helmets and other supplies. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.


Compensation and benefits: The target range for this position is $16 - 18 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
