The Community Outreach Coordinator/Assistant to Planner will lead and implement the planning process for two schools-based Safe Routes to School (SRTS) active transportation plans. Overall goal of project is to gather public comments and identify barriers to student active transportation at designated schools within two planning areas. Each planning area is comprised of approximately 15 K-12 schools.  Planning process will gather and synthesize public comment, previously prepared plans and consultant recommendations into a final plan. Work closely with Planner to ensure consistency and completion of planning processes.  Compile all relevant data, recommendations, maps and photographs into two discreet plans.  Write Executive Summary for two plans as well as individual school overview and recommendation list.  Present plan to local jurisdiction officials.  This is a grant funded position set to end on February 20th 2020.


  • Take full ownership of public participatory planning process for two discreet school-based projects.
  • Design parent/student survey methodology to gather comments for three discreet projects.
  • Organize and lead public meetings to engage stakeholders in planning process.
  • Calendar, Plan, Promote and Lead walking audits at schools to identify barriers to biking and walking.
  • Gather public comments through variety of venues; organize and screen for consultant.
  • Photograph potential barriers and areas of concern for project area.
  • Present consultant recommendations back to stakeholder groups.
  • Gather survey data and incorporate into data collection.
  • Incorporate public feedback, jurisdiction feedback and consultant recommendations into Safe Routes to School Transportation Plans for two school groups.
  • Present final plans in public venues.
  • Interact with a diverse school community including parents, teachers, school administrators and students.
  • Coordinate planning efforts with public works, public transportation and consultants staff.

 Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, urban planning, or a related field.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish with members of the public 2 years of community outreach experience or related experience.
  • Excellent writing skills sufficient to create plan narrative.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize between multiple. responsibilities and meet hard deadlines. Detail oriented in regard to data and tracking systems.
  • Public speaking skills; ability to lead public forums and lead discussions.
  • Strong public outreach skills; professional demeanor dealing with the public, school administers, local politicians, public agency staff partners and other stakeholders.
  • Proficient in MS office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. SmartSheet experience a plus.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite as well as GIS mapping.
  • Knowledge of: transportation planning theory, principles, and methods (data collection, statistical analysis, report writing); current trends in transportation planning especially as they pertain to active transportation and safe routes to school.
  • Strong budget management experience.
  • Advanced planning coursework or 1+ year working in planning capacity.
  • Experience working with school communities: school administrators, teachers, parents, and students.

Work Environment: The work environment is primarily an office setting.  Work will also be conducted on school grounds and in adjoining neighborhoods as school audits are conducted.

Compensation: Ecology Action offers a competitive hourly rate and a generous benefit package that includes medical, dental, vision and flexible spending benefits; a 401k-retirement plan with a 4% match; and group life insurance. Driving an insured personal vehicle on company business is required, and mileage reimbursement is provided at the Federal rate.
