This part-time position (20-32 hours/week, depending on candidate preference) is scheduled to run through March, 2019.

Ecology Action has an immediate need for a Green Business* Volunteer Specialist to join our Communities Group. This position is responsible for providing centralized services to external Green Business Coordinators in the tri-county region of Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey Counties. This includes recruiting and leading a team of volunteers and interns to support small and medium sized business recruitment, enrollment, and application completion, with a goal of certifying 20 new/renewed Green Businesses per county program by March 1, 2019. These targets will be achieved in each county by: 1) following up on leads provided by Coordinators in order to get 5 of them to complete recertification; and 2) generating 30-40 new leads in order to complete 15 new certifications.

This position will be overseen by the VP of Community Programs and will work closely with EA's Green Business Program Specialist. Because the selected candidate will work closely with various Green Business Coordinators throughout the region and manage a team of volunteers and interns, the successful candidate will be team oriented, highly organized, and self-motivated.  

*The Green Business Program is an incentive-based certification program aimed at guiding businesses toward more sustainable operations. In order for businesses to receive certification, they must register and complete a checklist administered by our jurisdiction partners. The Green Business Volunteer Coordinator will be trained in simple practices businesses can implement to green their operations, reducing their emissions and utility costs.


  • Meet with external Green Business Coordinators to determine support needs, ongoing process management procedures, timeline, lead generation goals, outreach opportunities, and intern workspace logistics (as needed)
  • Post and circulate volunteer and intern opportunities throughout tri-county area in order to recruit and fill 1-4 roles per program
  • Manage intern and volunteer applicant review, interviews, and onboarding
  • Develop and deliver training orientation to interns and volunteers
  • Lead kick-off planning meeting and establish bi-weekly team meetings to keep team members on task
  • Create a cloud-based lead generation tracking system to organize team and keep contacts and objectives clear
  • Track lead generation progress to goals and provide weekly updates to Coordinators
  • Manage ongoing recruitment activities for additional intern and volunteer positions
  • Research business associations, events, and in-person outreach opportunities
  • Identify, schedule and facilitate/conduct presentations at association/chamber meetings or high-profile tabling events for each program
  • Remain lead contact with volunteers and interns, businesses, and coordinators on specific follow-up actions required to efficiently move businesses through certification process

 Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • High School diploma/GED required, college degree preferred
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), Google Docs/Sheets, Business Skype
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and work independently
  • High level of initiative
  • Availability to work evenings and some weekend days as necessary

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience managing volunteers and/or staff strongly desired
  • Previous experience working in a professional office setting strongly desired
  • Bilingual Spanish language skills preferred
  • Enthusiasm for green practices and growing the green economy
  • Experience working in sales, environmental public education and/or community organizing
  • Marketing and communications experience
  • Familiarity with business community and community leaders in one or more regions of the tri-county region of Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties

Compensation: Ecology Action offers a competitive hourly rate and paid time off that is accrued based on hours worked.
