Ecology Action (EA) is seeking a part time (22 hours per week) Green Business Specialist employee to join our Community Programs Group from August, 2018 through February, 2019.

The Green Business Specialist will primarily be responsible for reaching out to small and medium sized businesses in San Benito County to explain the green business program, encourage them to enroll, and help them fill out their application to get Green Business certified. The Green Business Program is an incentive-based certification program to guide businesses toward more sustainable operations. In order for businesses to receive certification, they must register and complete a checklist administered by our jurisdiction partners. You will be trained in simple practices businesses can implement to "green" their operations, helping them make changes to reduce their emissions and utility costs.

Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with San Benito Green Business Coordinator to identify businesses to contact;
  • Follow up with 5 businesses identified by San Benito Coordinator who are in need of recertification in order to encourage them to recertify;
  • Follow up with 5 businesses identified by San Benito Coordinator who have started the application process but have not completed;
  • Research and contact small to medium sized business owners in target areas to pitch the Green Business Program and encourage them to participate;
  • Provide support and guidance to businesses as they work through the application process;
  • Connect businesses that have committed to getting certified with Environmental Innovations staff to complete the certification checklist;
  • Identify and participate in community events and functions in order to recruit business owners to the program;
  • Participate in meetings with local jurisdiction agency partners to identify their support needs and confirm progress to goal

Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work remotely; self-driven and confident
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), Google Docs/Sheets, Business Skype
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work independently
  • Availability to work evenings and some weekend days as necessary

Desired Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for green practices and growing the green economy
  • Experience working in sales, environmental public education and/or community organizing
  • Familiarity with business community and community leaders in one or more regions of the tri-county region of Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties
  • Bilingual Spanish language skills not required but preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk and hear, and use a computer keyboard and monitor.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 

Work Environment: The work environment is primarily in an office setting.

Compensation: Ecology Action offers a competitive hourly rate. This position is not eligible for benefits, except as required by law (including paid time off that is accrued based on hours worked).  Driving an insured personal vehicle on company business is required, and mileage reimbursement is provided at the Federal rate.
